Mission
The mission of the African American Health Expo
is to decrease the health disparities in the African
American community. While only 8% of the U.S. population
and 10.3% of Texas residents have diabetes, 12.9%
of African Americans in this country are impacted
by this disease. In Tarrant County, 32.2 percent
of African Americans have high blood pressure, compared
to 25.8 percent of Caucasians and 12.5 percent of
Hispanics. These and other health statistics highlight
the urgent need for lifestyle changes in the African
American community. The expo educates the community
on these and other issues, makes the community aware
of available local services and provides needed
information on how to make positive lifestyle changes.
